Profile in Brief
Polymer Institute Brno (PIB), formerly known as the Research Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (RIMC) has long been the research base of the applied research in the field of polymers.
The present shape of the Institute is a result of its almost 50 years´ evolution. Being for many years a state-sponsored organisation, the interests of RIMC were very broad - although always directed at areas more industrial than academic. However, the Institute has long cooperated closely with a number of universities and academic institutions at home and abroad.
Having a long tradition in Ziegler-Natta catalyst research and polymer stabilisation, the position of the Institute became quite clear-cut, particularly after the building of polyolefin production plants in Chemopetrol Litvinov in early seventies. Since then activities have been focused mainly on polyolefin catalyst research, new resin grades development, post-reactor modification of polymers (reactive compounding, reactive extrusion, polymer alloys, fillers), new formulations of additives (stabilisers, colour concentrates, antistatics, etc.) and trouble-shooting.
In 1994, in the course of the second privatisation wave in the Czech Republic, the Institute became a limited liability company with the status of an independent contract research organisation in which a German firm Consil VBmbH and a Czech petrochemical holding Unipetrol, a.s. had their capital share. In 2004, Chemopetrol, a.s. bought out the whole share from both owners and the Institute thus became a daughter company of the biggest petrochemical complex in the country. After the privatization of Unipetrol an ownership interconnection was created with Unipetrol Orlen Group. Thus, Polymer Institute Brno, spol. s r.o is now owned by Unipetrol RPA, s.r.o. and Unipetrol a.s. (99:1 ownership ratio).
The present funding of the Institute is based mainly on the revenues from contract research activities and small scale production. Although the predominant volume of research contracts come from the majority owner, the Institute is open to accepting projects from other domestic and foreign customers. The second important financial resource, i.e. small scale production, is oriented mostly at specialist areas in which the Institute has its own know-how (e.g. tailor-made additivation concentrates and colour masterbatches). The Institute has also been involved marginally in trade activities, and offers services in the field of information retrieval and consulting.

Quality Control System
The Institute built up the QC system according to CSN EN ISO 9001 in 2000. In 2009 was the QC system successfully recertificated (for the third time) according to CSN EN ISO 9001:2009 and received certificates from ITC, a.s. Zlín, CQS (Czech Association for Quality Certification) and IQ Net (the International Certification Network) for the following activities:
- Development, manufacture and sale of concentrates of auxiliary substances for polymers
- Development, manufacture and sale of modified polymers
- Sale of polymers
